120 miles – 7½ to 11 hours cycling
The ride will leave the school in the morning of 24th May. The first part of the
ride through rolling Leicestershire and then onto Northamptonshire will be testing
but given the training regime will be within capabilities. As the ride gets into
Buckinghamshire and then Hertfordshire and over 80 miles previous personal bests
will be set and new territory will be met.
Riders will experience leg cramps, soreness and pain from aching necks, shoulders
and arms. Tummy upset will be possible as the blood rushes to the legs to keep the
pedals turning. This will shut off the stomach. Riders will need to ensure they
keep eating so that carbohydrate levels stay high enough to fuel this level of effort
so that riders will not experience a brain ‘shut down’ also called ‘the bonk’.
These later miles will be a test of endurance but relief will be on hand with the
end near St Alban's
